The Scarlet macaw parrot is one of the most beautiful birds in the world. Their native habitat is in the rainforest and they used their strong, curved beaks to crack nuts and hard seeds. No one understands for sure why they eat clay from riverbanks. They can live for 90 years (but average 50) and can fly up to 35 MPH or 56 kilometers. They usually weigh around one kilo (2-2.5 pounds). Unlike their fellow parrots, their speech is quite limited. This one was perched inside the outdoor umbrella in Antigua Guatemala watching me as I ate.
